For college graduation, how close to the graduate must you be to be required to send a gift?

Full Question: It is customary to send invitations to family and friends at high school graduations. What about a college graduation? How close to the graduate must you be to be required to send a gift (e.g. grandson, nephew, cousin)?

First, invitations are usually a nice gesture for anyone. Invitations should be sent to as many people as you know or are able to accommodate. So, don't send an invitation to your old boss that hates you, but do send one to your Mom's best friend (plus, there is the relationship between the number of invitations you send and the amount of money padding your wallet).

Second, let's tackle this issue of gifts. Gifting is always optional and you should never feel obligated to give a gift. If you like the person and appreciate what they've accomplished, send them a great gift. If you don't like the person and you feel they just got lucky, send them a not so great gift.

The answer to these questions is all about feel. It's not morally wrong or morally right to give gifts or send invitations. Do what you feel is best, and may God look upon you with grace.
