How long will it take before these trains collide?

By Anonymous - Posted on 19 March 2008

Full Question: If a train is moving at 60 mph in a westward direction on a single track, and another train 800 miles away is moving at 40 mph in an eastward direction on that same track, how long will it take before these trains collide? Please provide the answer in the units of nanoseconds (10^-9 seconds). Thanks!

They will never collide because they are moving in opposite directions.

Assuming we're traveling east and west on a single rail from the equator...the earth is 24,901.55 miles in circumference.

So it would take...

about 1,807,616,250,000,000 nanoseconds.

They would collide the Earth is a sphere.

This would be right if the trains could travel over the oceans.

meh, it's feasible :)
