Silicon dioxide is a chemical compound (pure) made of one silicon atom and two oxygen atoms. Silicon dioxide is otherwise known as sand.

It might be useful to know that silion dioxide actually can make many different minerals besides sand. In fact, it is one of the few inorganic compounds that can make a network-covalent solid. This is known as quartz. I have also heard that by mass, silicon dioxide is the most common chemical compound on the planet, since a huge amount of the lithosphere (aka all the rocks) contain the compound. I am not sure how correct that is, however. Just thought I would share.

Have a great day!
